Boring Bacchanalia.
Documentary Series.
Artist Statement.
When I say Boring Bacchanalia is the title to this piece, I think it is truly fitting. Bacchanalia traditionally was a festival of drunkenness—it was lavish and dramatic. Now, I think that any gathering of people with the intention of altering their sense of reality via alcohol or drugs or atmosphere is—if you feel like being historical—considered a bacchanalian activity.
On this particular weekend of bacchanalia we start off at a Restaurant known for the flowing wine and sexy atmosphere—Goodfella’s. The night moves to a House with lovely architecture called the Victoria House, I have yet to figure out if this is because it was on a street named Victoria St. or if it is in fact a Victorian era house.
There are groups of people in circles playing music, singing along, smoking cigarettes, smoking other things, low lighting, long exposures.
I feel this series can be viewed as such: an intimate gathering of a conversation happening here and there; a quiet song with intent listeners; a polite passing of a lighter and thus a lit cigarette; some people realizing that I had a camera and that they wanted to write with lighters; another group of individuals talking amongst themselves. This is not how every bacchanalian activity occurs, believe me, but this particular weekend the weather was perfect, the lighting was lovely, and the conversation and music was just right.

The following images are intimate, lingering, blurred, relaxed, peaceful and content with just being at a gathering and having a few drinks. The communal act of singing and talking and drinking and smoking can never be underestimated. I am a lover of the nightlife and what happens when bored friends get together to talk about love and life and sing songs. Some nights are crazy, some. But the majority of them are laid back as such—but I still prefer to think of us carrying on this tradition of why drunkenness is important.
